35 Candles...

I enjoyed a sunny, yet windy trip to San Juan Island for my 35th birthday, accompanied by Travis. First, we stopped by the Tulip Festival in La Conner/Mt Vernon, WA.  Afterward, we rode about in Anacortes for about an hour, then rode onto the ferry headed west for Friday Harbor. We settled into the BandB, then headed out for a 12 mile hilly ride via the Pear Point Rd loop and out on Cattle Point Rd, almost to Cape San Juan. We neglected to take calories with us and we both bonked pretty hard. It was a very quiet and slow ride back to town. We stopped at the first gas station and bought candy bars just to put some sugar into our systems. For dinner, we went to Cask and Schooner restaurant. Travis enjoyed his Chicken and veggies sandwich and a microbrew, while I ordered a not so great Dunganess Crab risotto and a glass of red wine. The town was pretty quiet and it was super windy, so we called it a night. The next morning, we enjoyed breakfast with the other folk. A couple from Renton and two ladies, childhood friends, from Oak Harbor. Afterward, we went to the local grocery store to stock up on calories for the bicycle trip.  We rode 21 miles total, out to Roche Harbor and back. It was a beautiful day, minimal wind compared to the previous day. We even saw a camel! Not even joking. We made the 4:15pm ferry back to Anacortes and enjoyed dinner, Basil Pesto pizza with lots of veggies, side salad and a Nut Brown microbrew. Yum! Especially needed after all that cycling!
All I can say is that despite the past, I am very grateful for the people and things that are in my life. I have two amazing dogs, a wonderful boyfriend who cares a lot about me, the ability to ride a bicycle, my doctorate, a good job, awesome friends and a family who loves me. I love the person that I have become in these 35 years.  It's going to be a great year :)
